Kapadvanj, a town, 68Kms away from Ahmedabad is known for its Kund Vav (Square stepwell) structure, was once an important link in the textile trade out of Cambay port, and specialized in mirror-work embroidered cloth. During its period of prosperity, the Dawoodi Bohra community built significant residences to mark the influence on vernacluar and regional architecture.
The Kund Vav, marks the center of the town, acting as a gathering and celebratory place for the people. The current state of the Vav mentions the non-functionality and low maintenance due to which the place becomes stagnant and unused.
The encroached buil-forms on the periphery of the Vav, residences, market plays a major role in how the context is influencing the activities around the Kund and the street. The peripheral fabric becomes a threshold between street and Kund Vav which has the opportunity to invite public to use both spaces at same time.
